Based in Dakar, the Regional Office for West and Central Africa covers 22 countries (15 in West Africa and 7 in Central Africa), where French, English, Portuguese and Spanish are spoken.


General Presentation

The mandate of the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime is to be a global leader in the fight against drugs and crime. Established in 2001, the Unodc is the successor organization to the Centre of International Crime Prevention (CICP) and the UN Drug Control Programme (UNDCP). UNODC is headquartered in Vienna, Austria, and has 22 national, regional and liaison field offices. UNODC's technical assistance programmes and projects rely on funding from voluntary contributions, particularly from the major donor countries, 90% of its budget. The Executive Director of UNODC is appointed by the Secretery-General of the United Nations, and holdsthe rank of Deputy Secretery-General. The current Executive Director, Mr. Antonio Maria Costa, was appointed in 2001.

Electronic edition of the Perspectives magazine

UNODC's new magazine Perspectives will cover the broad issues of drugs, crime and terrorism from a number of angles and ensure that voices from all over the world are heard. The magazine is available online in English. Relevant articles will be translated to other languages.

UNODC marked the Inter-national Day against Corruption on 9 December 2006, one year after the United Nations Convention against Corruption entered into force. The theme was "You can stop corruption".

 


Children and drugs is the theme of the 2006 campaign launched on 26 June, the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. This year's slogan is "Drugs are not child's play".
